How does the calculator work?

  • Equally: the shared costs divided by two.
  • By income: your share of your combined income times the costs. If you earn 60 per cent of the income, you pay 60 per cent.
  • Same left: your combined income minus the costs, divided equally. Whatever you have above your half goes towards the costs.

Which way suits you?

There is no right answer. If you earn about the same, splitting equally works well. If the gap is large, many couples split by income. Read more in Joint finances or separate?.

Common questions

How do you split rent by income?
Work out each person's share of your combined income and pay the same share of the rent. If one of you has 60 per cent of the income, that person pays 60 per cent of the rent.
Should you use income before or after tax?
Usually after tax, because that is the money you actually pay with.
